Average Calculator

Find the mean of any list of numbers — paste or type, separated any way.

Numbers can be comma-, space- or line-separated — decimals are fine.

How to use average calculator

  1. Type or paste your list of numbers into the box.
  2. Separate numbers with commas, spaces or new lines — decimals are fine.
  3. The average appears instantly, together with the count, sum, smallest and largest values.
  4. Edit the list at any time; the results update as you type.

Examples

Average course grade

Four assignments graded 85, 92, 78 and 90 give a mean of 86.25 — the count, sum, min and max appear too.

One number per line

Lists pasted from a spreadsheet or document often have one value per line — just paste them in. This one averages 14.5.

Mixed separators and decimals

Commas, spaces and decimals can be mixed freely: 10.5, 9.25 and 11 average 10.25.

What is Average?

The average — more precisely the arithmetic mean — is the single number that best represents a list of values. You meet it everywhere: a course grade computed from assignment scores, a batter's season average, the typical monthly electricity bill. The formula is simple: add every number together and divide by how many there are. The mean of 85, 92, 78 and 90 is (85 + 92 + 78 + 90) / 4 = 86.25.

The numbers around the mean matter too. The sum, the count, and the minimum and maximum often tell as much as the mean itself — a high average with a wide gap between the smallest and largest value describes a very different list than a tight cluster does. This calculator shows all of them at once so you can see the shape of your data, not just its center.

Type or paste your list into the box, separated however you like — commas, spaces, or one number per line. The page parses the list, ignores anything that is not a number, and updates the count, sum, mean, minimum and maximum with every keystroke. Everything is computed locally in your browser, so you can safely paste private data such as grades or sales figures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count, so a single very large or very small value can pull it. The median is the middle value after sorting and is unaffected by extremes. For skewed data like house prices, the median is often the fairer summary.

What happens if the box is empty?

Nothing is shown until at least one valid number is present. An empty box simply clears the result, and text that is not a number is ignored when parsing.

Can I enter decimals?

Yes — decimal and negative numbers are supported, and scientific notation like 1.5e3 is read as 1500. The results are displayed with up to six decimal places, trailing zeros trimmed.

Does the calculator round the average?

It displays the mean rounded to six decimal places, which is exact for nearly all everyday lists. The underlying value is not truncated, so adding more numbers stays accurate.

How should I separate the numbers?

Any mix of commas, spaces, tabs or new lines works, which means you can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet without reformatting it first.

Is there a limit on how many numbers I can average?

No practical limit. The computation runs on your own device, so even lists with thousands of entries update instantly.
