How to use tip calculator
- Enter the bill amount before or after tax, whichever you prefer — see the FAQ for the convention.
- Enter a tip percentage, or tap one of the quick buttons — 10%, 15%, 18% or 20% — to fill it in.
- If you are splitting the check, enter the number of people; otherwise leave it at 1.
- Read the tip amount, total and per-person share in the result as you type.
Examples
$85 dinner for two at 18%
An $85 bill with an 18% tip comes to a $15.30 tip and a $100.30 total — $50.15 each for two.
$120.50 bill split four ways
Tap "Try it" to load the bill, split it four ways and press the 15% quick button — the total comes to roughly $139, or about $34.60 each.
$34 lunch, solo, at 20%
A $6.80 tip on a $34 bill makes a $40.80 total for one.
What is Tip?
Tipping is the customary way to reward service workers in many countries, and the percentage you add is a social norm as much as a calculation. In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard at sit-down restaurants: 15% for solid service, 18% as the comfortable default, and 20% or more for excellent service, with 10% reserved for underwhelming experiences. Bartenders, taxi and rideshare drivers and hotel staff each have their own norms, but the restaurant percentage is the one most people need at the table.
Splitting the check adds the second bit of mental arithmetic nobody wants to do after dinner: divide the total by the number of people, and sometimes each person tipped a different amount on their own order. This calculator handles both jobs at once — enter the bill, pick a percentage (the quick buttons cover the common choices) and set how many people are sharing.
The results update as you type, showing the tip amount, the bill plus tip, and what each person owes including their share of the tip. Everything runs in your browser, so you can settle the check at the table without installing an app, creating an account or finding a network connection.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard range: 15% for solid service, 18% as a common default, and 20% or more for excellent service. In much of Europe a service charge is already included and simply rounding up is appreciated instead. When travelling, match the local norm rather than your home habit.
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
The traditional convention is the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not a service you are rewarding. In practice the difference is small — on an 8% sales tax, tipping on the post-tax amount raises an 18% tip to about 19.4% — so either choice is socially acceptable; just be consistent within a group.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
This calculator splits evenly across the party size. For uneven splits, run it once per person: enter each person's own items as the bill, apply the same percentage, and leave the people field at 1. Many restaurant point-of-sale systems can also split the check by seat when you pay.
Should I tip on takeout or at a coffee shop?
For counter service with no table service a tip is optional; many people leave the change or $1–2 for baristas, and around 10% for takeout from full-service restaurants, where staff still cook, pack and check your order.
What if the service was genuinely bad?
A tip can be reduced — toward 10% — for poor service, ideally after giving the server or manager a chance to fix the problem first. In the US, tipped workers depend on tips for most of their income, so withholding the entire tip is a last resort rather than a first response.
