Examples
Squares in Pythagoras
Type the letters and digits normally — the 2s become superscript exponents.
Mass–energy equivalence
A famous equation with a superscript 2.
Footnote-style markers
Digits convert too, so plain notes can carry raised reference numbers.
What is Superscript?
Superscript characters sit raised above the baseline — the standard notation for exponents like x², footnote markers, and math or science annotations. Unicode dedicates a block of superscript glyphs to them: every lowercase letter, every digit 0–9, and the symbols +, -, =, ( and ). This generator maps your text to those characters as you type. That means exponents, ion charges, footnote references and scientific notation can all be written in plain text fields.
It is handy far beyond homework: marking footnote-style references in plain text, annotating formulas in chat or notes, writing units and equations where rich formatting is unavailable, and styling dates and ordinals. Students checking homework, teachers writing worksheets and anyone raising a number to a power in a chat all use the same trick.
Like the other text tools here, the conversion is a local, character-by-character Unicode mapping. Your input never leaves the browser, the preview updates on every keystroke, and the copy button grabs the result for pasting anywhere plain text goes. There is nothing to configure — type, convert, copy.
Frequently asked questions
Which characters have superscript versions?
All lowercase letters a–z, digits 0–9, and the symbols +, -, =, ( and ). Everything else — capitals, other punctuation, spaces — passes through unchanged.
Why did my capital letters not change?
This tool maps lowercase letters only; capitals are left as-is. Type in lowercase for a fully superscripted result.
How do I write exponents like x squared?
Just type the number after the letter: x2 becomes x², and 10-3 becomes 10⁻³. Use the hyphen key for the minus sign.
Does superscript text work everywhere?
The glyphs are standard Unicode and render on modern devices and browsers. A few niche fonts are missing one or two of the rarer characters.
Is this the same as superscript formatting in Word?
No — this produces plain Unicode characters, not rich-text formatting. That is exactly why it works in plain-text fields like chats, bios and code comments, and why it survives copy-paste between apps.
